  15. A Peacemaker Is Slain

  17. <p>    The motorcade was snaking its way through lunch-hour
  18. traffic in a residential quarter of West Beirut when a parked
  19. car loaded with 330 lbs. of TNT erupted in a shattering
  20. explosion. Rescuers dashed through the flames to the black
  21. Cadillac at the center of the motorcade, but it was too late.
  22. "Our beloved Mufti is murdered!" screamed a policeman. The
  23. explosion also killed 21 others and injured 75 bystanders.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>    Thus ended the life of Sheik Hassan Khaled, the revered
  26. Grand Mufti of Lebanon's 900,000 Sunni Muslims. Sheik Khaled had
  27. devoted most of his 68 years to seeking an accommodation between
  28. his country's perennially fractious Muslim and Christian
  29. populations.

  31. <p>    Responsibility for the bombing remained uncertain. The
  32. Syrians, who control West Beirut, blamed Lebanon's Christians;
  33. the Christians accused the Syrians. But fittingly, the death of
  34. the peace-loving cleric inspired a rare display of unity:
  35. Christians and Muslims joined in a one-day nationwide strike to
  36. mourn his loss.
